A new paradigm for mobility - how it all started
Have
you ever seen a flock of birds pushing and
jostling in mid-air, competing for space to land
on a power line? No, of course not. They land
gracefully, spreading themselves out to utilise
all of the available space on one power line and
when it's full, they simply move on to the
next.
Whilst watching bee-eaters
landing on power lines, a mathematician, W. Hamra,
noticed the fluidity of the birds' behaviour.
Struck by their ability to organise themselves
before they arrived at their destination, W. Hamra
pointed out this phenomenon to his son, an
entrepreneurial market disruptor, N. Hamra. Being
of an entrepreneurial mindset, he immediately saw
an opportunity and the germ of an idea began to
grow.
N. Hamra wondered why, with all
the current technological advancements, global
mobility experts still accept congestion as a sad
fact of life! If the birds could work together,
and coordinate their collective arrival so
seamlessly, avoiding any form of congestion, then
why couldn’t the same principle be applied somehow
to human transportation?
Discussing the
idea with his brother, A. Hamra, himself an
international mobility expert, he understood that
what the world is in urgent need of is a new
science of transportation to cope with increasing
demands on existing networks. There was no denying
that congestion had become an inescapable problem
facing transportation authorities which was
causing people to compete daily for an inadequate
infrastructure and suffer from endless delays, as
well as being subject to frustration, pollution,
poor health and wasted resources.
Looking to Transform Mobility
He gathered a team of close associates around the problem, including artificial intelligence and deep learning experts, and with the help of their brilliant input, they began to validate the idea. Diving into the core problem of congestion, its formation, its avoidance and the limitations of available technologies, they came up with two major deficiencies in current practice:
Current congestion management measures are mostly reactive instead of being proactive. Even in available proactive measures, passengers wait on roads until bottlenecks get resolved.
Travellers’ behaviours and choices are generally made at the individual level or household level, thus part of the congestion is unintentionally self-made by the travellers themselves.
A new paradigm for mobility - Mobility in Partnership
The team started to develop a different approach using artificial intelligence and deep learning to equip travellers with the right tools to solve the problem. A new Mobility Platform and Transport App were conceived whose guidance and information would elevate the decision-making process and enable travellers to leverage the intelligence of the whole community to reduce congestion.
Empowering Communities with Proactive Mobility via a government-traveller partnership
The app would enable the traveller to see an overall demand for mobility and the future movement of the community against the total availability of the network. With this information they plan their departure time to a given destination subject to current conditions in the network and future choices of other travellers. Like the bee-eaters calmly using all the power lines available, the app would optimise overall usage of the available infrastructure at all times, giving travellers a new lease of life!
About Us
Governments aren't beating congestion
Every
traveller knows the frustration of being stuck in
a bottleneck in rush hour and the stress of
arriving late, as well as the frustration of
having to compete with each other to reach their
destination. Unfortunately, travellers'
frustrations are met with an apparent inability
from policymakers’ to solve the problem. Worse
still, the perpetual presence of congestion brings
with it negative effects, leaving both travellers
and governments in a complex and dangerous
predicament.
There is a raft of known
improvements that can be made, such as creating
HOT lanes, HOV lanes, reducing the number of cars
on the road by adopting “parking cash-out”
programs, using intelligent transport systems to
speed traffic flows, installing ramp metering or
clustering high-density housing around
attractions. However, none of them addresses the
root of the issue: congestion happens when demand
for mobility exceeds the infrastructure capacity.
HAMRA31 tracks the demand for mobility and
predicts the formation of future bottlenecks
before they happen and incites travelers to select
a departure time, so these bottlenecks do not take
place.
Mobility in Partnership
That is why we have devised a solution to empower proactive travellers themselves with technology, using a government-traveller partnership to beat congestion. The Mobility Platform and Transport App allow travellers to coordinate indirectly with each other while preserving their privacy; it applies artificial intelligence and deep learning to translate the future mobility choices registered by travellers into congestion levels over the future time slots. The congestion level will guide travellers to find the best departure time slot and best routes that suit their travel constraints, thus avoiding the formation of bottlenecks.
Our philosophy is simple and intuitive
We elevate mobility to a community level.
We beat congestion with zero investment in new infrastructure by maintaining the demand for mobility within the infrastructure capacity
An app and platform that Influences and Shapes the Demand for Mobility
An app and platform that Influences and Shapes the Demand for Mobility
HAMRA31 connects travellers and governments to the same platform, where artificial intelligence and deep learning is applied to utilize a given network. The Smart Mobility Platform and user-friendly Transport App can accommodate any number of origins and destinations and any number of travellers, making it ideal for extensive urban areas.
